After Illness

The body has an amazing ability to recuperate after illness, trauma, surgery or even prolonged periods of stress. But it is after illness we are at our weakest and much greater care needs to be taken with health.

Age is a contributing factor in how long the body takes to recover. As we age the body’s ability to repair lessens, the immune system takes longer to respond, nutritional absorption is impaired and recovery is slower.

Steps to a quicker recovery

  • Keep a positive mental attitude. While recuperating a good mental attitude cannot be underestimated. It will ensure you follow medical advice, keep up with exercise required, and helps the body to heal. There are many studies which have found the benefits of humour and laughter in recovery, as well as believing in a positive outcome and having support from family and friends. Keeping “spirits up” is very important.

  • Follow a healthy lifestyle, including exercise and sleep habits. After long periods of convalescence or inactivity, it is important to rebuild muscle tone and increase circulation and blood flow. Sleep is also an essential part of the body’s repair process.

  • Fresh air and sunlight not only help the body produce much needed Vitamin D, but also assist in a positive mental attitude. Try to spend some time outdoors.

Nutritional Solutions

Lack of appetite can be a common problem during and after illness, especially in the elderly. Certain medications can also reduce the absorption of vitamins and minerals. If nutrients are lacking in the diet, recovery can be impeded. Supplements may be useful to make up the shortfall during this time. The following are especially important.

  • Omega 3 fatty acids (help with many aspects of bodily repair and cell health)

  • Antioxidant vitamins – Vitamin A, C and E. Selenium is a mineral which is particularly high in antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help the body by counteracting damaging free radicals which can be produced during times of illness, medication and stress.

  • Herbal “pick me ups” may also be useful as a natural source of energy, and to help restore vitality. These include Gingko and Ginseng.
