Insect bites are a fact of life in Australia – we have hundreds of insects which thrive in our warm environment. Some insect bites are minor (such as ants and mosquitos) some are more dangerous (spiders, wasps).
For more serious insect bites, always seek medical help. But to deter your average backyard barbecue “guests” try some of these natural hints and tips.
Mozzies hate eucalyptus oil! Why not make your own pleasantly-scented Bosisto’s Eucalyptus personal insect repellent?
Directions: Blend 100mL canola oil (or your favourite unscented body oil) with 30 drops Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil, 10 drops of basil oil (available from health food shops) and 10 drops of citronella oil. Apply a little to the palm of the hand, rub and warm, smooth over exposed areas. Re-apply every two to three hours.
Pieces of string soaked in eucalyptus oil and coiled on plates can help keep mosquitos away from barbecue and family areas, as well as emitting a fresh bushland scent.
Tea Tree Oil is perfect for treating minor insect bites and stings. With its natural antiseptic qualities it helps disinfect the skin and helps reduce the pain and itching.
Soak a cotton ball in 100% pure Bosisto’s Botanicals Tea Tree Oil or use your finger to dab directly onto the site of the bite or sting for soothing relief.
Another handy product is extralife Euky Bearub – as well as being a soothing rub for children’s coughs and colds, it’s also great for insect bites! Pop a tube in your picnic basket to dab on bites for instant relief.
