What does it do?

The Vicks Starry Night Humidifier is the ultimate in soothing comfort for children (and adults) of all ages.
It creates a 24-hour flow of invisible moisture for easier breathing and a better night’s sleep.  Children will be transfixed by the Starry Night display – a tranquil starlight pattern projected on the ceiling.  While the invisible mist assists comfortable breathing a starlit “sky” distracts and helps them drift off to sleep. Use the Vicks VapoPad scent pad to further comfort and soothe, with the gradual release of aromatic essential oil vapours.

Interesting Information

Water is a nutrient that all forms of life must have to survive.  Every function in the body requires sufficient moisture to work properly.

The lungs and respiratory tract are a good example of systems dependent on moisture to work well.

With sufficient moisture levels, a healthy layer of mucus forms to help cold and flu viruses, pollutants and other debris in the air you breathe. Cillia - the tiny hairs that line the respiratory tract - then expel the invaders.  This whole system depends on moisture to operate and is a vital part of the body’s natural protection against colds and flu.

In winter, relative humidity can drop to as low as 10% - drier than the air in the Sahara Desert.  Heating units and reverse cycle air conditioning in homes and offices also further remove moisture from the air.

So what is a comfortable humidity level?   Most people experience problems when the relative humidity level drops below 25%. A comfortable humidity level is around 40-50%.

This level of humidity helps people breathe better, sleep better, improves the complexion and relieves congestion. It also stops dry-out damage to plants, paintings and furniture and helps save money on

heating bills, since proper humidity allows people to feel more comfortable at lower temperatures.

Humidified air may also be of benefit for seasonal hayfever and in dry and dusty environments to help relieve irritated, ichy eyes, skin and throat.

Features and Benefits

Vicks uses evaporative technology to create “invisible moisture” -  water is impelled through a wetted filter to humidify the air flow.

Other humidifiers use ultrasonic oscillation, where vibrating plates transform water into droplets which are then blown into the room.  The disadvantage is they can create fine dust particles as part of this process – dust which can irritate sensitive noses, lungs and sinuses.

Evaporative technology is not only more hygienic with no dust creation, it is also very energy efficient and it creates a stronger and more consistent flow of aromatic vapours (when used with Vicks scent pads) compared to other methods.

Other features

Automatic Moisture Balance System
Some vaporisers and humidifiers produce large droplets of steam or mist, which can quickly make a room feel clammy and uncomfortable.

The Starry Night’s unique evaporative system produces a very fine, “invisible” mist, helping ensure maximum comfort levels for you and your family.

Starry Night projection
Babies and children can be difficult to settle, especially when unwell.  The Vicks Starry Night assists by creating a tranquil starlight projection on the ceiling – this is independently operated, so it can be switched on or off as needed.  Watch them drift off to sleep transfixed by the “starry night”, while the humidifier does its work.

Two output setting
Choose from two modes –

·Maximum: for a higher moisture level or larger rooms

·Sleep mode: for quiet operation or smaller rooms.

Filter for healthier breathing

Many “cool” water humidifiers don’t use filters, which means potential exposure to pollutants and impurities present in the water.

The Vicks Starry Night protects your family’s health with the Protec Extended Life Humidifier Filter (included).  This unique filter removes minerals and pollutants, and is specially treated to inhibit up to 99.99% of mould growth.  It also helps help prevent the growth and migration of algae and bacteria.

The filter should be replaced every 3 months, or every month in hard water areas.

Vicks VapoPads
Vicks VapoPads are special scent pads containing eucalyptus, menthol and other essential oils.

When used in the Starry Night Humidifier they work with heat to create strong, aromatic vapours (8 hours of scent per pad) which quickly penetrate the nasal passages to comfort and soothe.

Scent pads can be used with the Vicks Starry Night Humidifier for all adults and children from 4.5kg upwards (approximately 3 months +).  For children between 4.5-10kg do not use more than 2 pads in a 24 hour period.

The unit comes with one free Vicks VapoPad and refills are available.

Child friendly & safer
The Vicks Starry Night is a family-friendly humidifier with many safety advantages.

The water inside is not heated, so there is no burn or scald risk, giving parents peace of mind.  Scent pads are secured inside the unit and out of little fingers’ reach.

The unit also cannot overheat or “run dry” as it is protected by a thermal link and cool air flow down the coil, which stops the motor from overheating.

Trusted Brand Name

The names Vicks and colds are synonymous in Australian households. Vicks is one of Australia’s most trusted cough and cold brands, used for decades by many generations of families.

How To Use
  1. Select a firm, level location at least 15cm away from any walls for proper airflow.  Place the humidifier on a water-resistant surface, as water can damage furniture and some flooring.
  2. Remove the tank and set aside.  Remove the filter from the humidifier and soak the filter in cool water.  Do not wring filter.
  3. Remove filter tray from unit before installing the wet filter.
  4. Fold filter flat.  Insert wet filter into filter tray.  Place filter tray back in humidifier (refer to diagrams on instruction booklet for guidance).
  5. If using a Vicks VapoPad, remove tank and locate the scent pad slot.  If there is a used scent pad in the slot carefully remove it.
  6. Open the new scent pad, taking care not to touch it directly with your fingers if possible.  Use the bag to hold and position as you insert the scent pad with the angled side facing downward, into the slot.
Warning: do not rub face or eyes, or place fingers in mouth after touching the scent pad.  The oils could act as an irritant.
  7. Fill the tank.  Turn the tank upside down.  Remove tank cap by turning counter-clockwise.
  8. Fill the tank with cool tap water.  Replace tank cap.  Tighten by turning clockwise.  Place the tank back on humidifier.

Tip:  Bring your filled tank to the humidifier base - which you have already placed in the chosen position - and assemble it there, rather than carrying the base and filled tank together.

  1. With dry hands, and with the power switch in the “off” position, plug your filled humidifier in at the wall.
  2. Set the dial on the right hand side to the desired output: “Max” or “Sleep Mode”.
  3. Turn the dial on the left hand side to “on” position to activate the Starry Night projector.

Note: the projector can be turned off while the humidifier is in use, or can even be used on its own, as a night light without the humidifier running.

Changing & maintaining the filter

The filter should be replaced every 1-3 months (or each winter season) depending on your water quality.

Check your filter regularly. Any of the following conditions indicate it’s time to change:

  • A buildup of impurities and minerals (evidenced by discolouration)
  • A noticeable decrease in the humidifier output
  • The top of the filter is not moist to the touch
  • The filter has large holes or tears.

New filters can be purchased from the distributor FGB Natural products at www.fgb.com.au/shop.

Vicks recommends only using Protec WF2 Replacement Wicking Filters.  The use of other filters may lead to substandard performance.

To change the filter, please refer to instructions and diagrams in the instruction booklet.

Cleaning your humidifier
You should clean your humidifier weekly while in use.

Cleaning involves two steps – scale removal, and disinfecting (always performed in that order to avoid harmful chemical interactions).

Note: remove filter before cleaning.  Failure to remove the filter during cleaning will destroy the filter.

Scale removal

1. Turn off and unplug your humidifier.
2. Remove and empty the water tank.
3. Remove the filter and set aside.
4. Remove filter tray and fill filter tray and water tank with undiluted white vinegar, and soak for 10-15 minutes.
5. Using undiluted vinegar, wipe base thoroughly.
6. Rinse water tank, filter tray and base thoroughly with water to remove scale.

1.  Turn off and unplug your humidifier.

2. Remove and empty the water tank.

3. Remove the filter and set aside.

4. Dilute 1 tablespoon of bleach in about 3.7 litres of cool water (the amount that fills the entire humidifier).

5. Fill water tank with the water and bleach solution.  Remove water tray from unit and fill with the remaining water and bleach solution.  Wipe base with the same solution.

6. Let stand for 20 minutes.

7. Rinse water tray and tank thoroughly until the smell of bleach is gone.
